- Ida Marie DePonceau (née Sullins) from Athens, Alabama passed away peacefully on September 17th, 2026, living a full life until the age of 92. Beloved wife of the late Dominic DePonceau of Niagara Falls, NY and daughter of Thomas Lee and Nemo (née Carter) Sullins. She is survived by her five children – Thomas DePonceau, Donna (Stephen) Raymond, Douglas DePonceau, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) DePonceau, and Robert (Florence) DePonceau, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She joins her siblings in peace – Lena “Tootsie” Powell, June Walls, Max Sullins, Wanda Tate, Penny Sullins, and Jimmy Carter. Known affectionately as Gigi, Marie was a devout member of the Holy Roman Catholic Church and rarely missed her daily 2pm prayer time and faith recitations at home. She also enjoyed painting, needle-work, gardening (she could nurture any plant back to life), cooking, antiquing, watching mystery TV shows, eating frozen grapes and nutty buddies (not together mind you!), making her famous grape salad and her hummingbird-style cake with a creamy pineapple whip topping for family events, and spending time with family. Born and raised in the coal-mining town of McAlpin, West Virginia without electricity, running water, or indoor plumbing, Marie was a hardy and resourceful woman who moved to Niagara Falls to take a job as a switchboard operator at a telephone company, where she charmed northern callers with her southern accent. In Niagara Falls, she met both her life-long best friend, Marilyn, and a young Italian Navy sailor, Dominic, who stole her heart. Married in May 1953, Marie and Dominic built a life on Grand Island, NY with their five children, revolving around many Italian dinners and family time after mass on Sundays. In 1984, she and Dominic moved to Meridian, MS and then relocated to Athens, AL in 1994 where they resided for the remainder of their lives. Gigi saw a lot in her 92 years on earth, and the saying is true that every time a person who lived a long life dies, a library crumbles. She was full of wisdom and had excellent advice for anyone who would listen. She was also a salt of the earth person and was quick to share her mind. Her calm manner was a respite from the fast-paced world we live in today. She gave her loved ones tremendous joy, which they reciprocated in turn. Marie’s earliest memory of her affection towards her Savior Jesus was when she was walking to school in the morning and there was a tree on the side of the path with leaves that looked kind of “ferny”. When she looked up and saw the sunlight coming through, the thought in her head was that Jesus was smiling at her. She remembered it all her life and believed it to be true. We are happy she is in His presence and peace today, reunited with her husband of 54 years. She will be sorely missed. Visitation will be held at McConnell Funeral Home on 1200 E. Forrest St. in Athens, AL on Friday, September 25, 2026, from 11am-1pm, a service in her honor will be held at 1pm by a Christian burial in Roselawn Cemetery.

- Thomas Harry Earley 91, of Decatur passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025 at Decatur Morgan Hospital surrounded by his family. Tom was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 18, 1933 to Harry and Beatrice Earley. He attended Shades Valley High School and Auburn University, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and graduated in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves, and then went on to work as a territory manager for National Cement Company for 40 years. Upon retirement, he was the recipient of the first annual Tom Earley Award of Excellence. Tom was active in the Decatur First United Methodist Church and enjoyed golfing with his golfing buddies, traveling, and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandson, who knew him as Papa. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother James W. Earley. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Hall Earley; daughter Scottie Earley-Moss (Scott); son Thomas Jeffrey Earley (Lisa); grandchildren, Jeffrey Davis Earley, Morgan Moss Beard (Kienan), Nelson Phillip Earley, and Jonah Michael Moss; great-grandson James Micah Beard; and brother William R. Earley (Ann), and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be April 5, 2025 from 11:00- 12:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Decatur. Funeral service to follow at 12:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Alex Beaube officiating. Ridout’s Brown Service Funeral Home is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First United Methodist Church of Decatur or Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation.

- Glenda Joyce Brown, 83, of Van Vleet, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, following a brief illness. Her faith, generous spirit, and love for others were a blessing to all who knew her, and her memory will remain in their hearts forever. Though Glenda will truly be missed, her family and friends find comfort in knowing that she is finally at peace and reunited with those she loved who went before her. A lifelong resident of the Okolona and Van Vleet community, Glenda was a faithful member of Van Vleet Baptist Church. She was a skilled seamstress in the furniture industry and a homemaker. Glenda and her late husband, Fred, had many pets over the years and she had so much love for each one of them. Glenda also loved to travel in her younger years and went on many cruises and other adventures with her close friends. Glenda was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Fred Brown; her son, John Kennon Brown; her mother, Lurley Weaver; her mother-in-law, Ruby Mae Brown; her father-in-law, John Murphy Brown; and her nephew, Stony Brock. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Brown; her grandsons, John Allen Brown (Lauren) and Charlie Bronc Anderson (Rachael); four great grandchildren, Collins & Keely Brown, and Jace & Brixton Anderson; her sister-in-law, Paula Benoit; her niece, Angie Huddleston (Jim); her great-nieces, Amanda Graham and Brittany West (Glenn); and her great-great-nieces, Paislee Weston and Destinee Anderson, along with many extended family members. A special thanks goes out to her caregivers Donna Holley and Jessica Stubblefield, NMMC Home Health, her dear friend, Barbara Phillips, and her church community at Van Vleet Baptist Church for their compassion and empathy during her illness. A memorial service celebrating Glenda’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Lee Memorial Funeral Home with Bro. Bobby Wilbanks officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. There will be a visitation before the funeral service starting at 10:30. Lee Memorial Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Honorary pallbearers are Lamar Phillips, Bobby Hall, David Elrod, Bill Roberts, Mike Wren, Joe Kilgo, Leo Valladares, Eddie Hill, Eddie Thornton, Larry Butler, and Jerry Clement.
