James Daniel “JD” Simmons, age 92, and his beloved wife, Jennie Sue Baker Simmons, age 86, passed from this life just days apart, JD on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and Jennie on Monday, November 2, 2026.
JD was born on October 5, 1934, to the late Arthur and Gertrude Dodson Simmons. Jennie Sue was born on November 26, 1939, to the late James Drew and Emma Lou Mills Baker. Both cherished spending time with their family and found joy in the simple things in life. JD enjoyed serving others and working on lawnmowers. Jennie Sue enjoyed walking, cooking, and spending time sitting on her porch swing watching the hummingbirds. Both were faithful members of the Spencer Church of Christ. Above all, family was the center of their lives, and the love they shared will live on through the generations they leave behind.
In addition to his parents, JD was preceded in death by his brothers, Clyde Simmons, Earl Simmons, Earnest Simmons, Douglas Simmons, and Randall Simmons; his twin sister, Ovalee Peeler; and sister, Becky Hensley.
In addition to her parents, Jennie Sue was preceded in death by her brothers, James Baker, Charles Baker, and Ben Baker; and her sister, Betty Baker Simmons.
They are survived by their loving daughter, Teresa Delong; grandchildren, Nick (Beth) Delong, Cole (Amber) Delong, and Drew Delong; and great-grandchildren, Rylan Delong, Slade Delong, Reverdy Delong, Syler Delong, Olan Delong, Ari Delong, and Waverly Delong. Jennie Sue is also survived by her sister, Geneva Ann (Earl Gene) Yates, and JD is survived by his sister, Roberta Wood. Several nieces, nephews, and extended family members also survive.
A funeral ceremony for Mr. and Mrs. Simmons will be held on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Layne Funeral Home Chapel with Nick Delong, Cole Delong, and Drew Delong officiating. Burial will follow in Spencer Town Cemetery. Visitation times will be Thursday, November 5, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday, November 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m.
