Charles ‘Chuck’ Edward Duffy, 89, of Huntsville, died Monday at Magnolia Trace. He was born in Davenport, Iowa. He was the son of Thomas and Genevieve (Volz) Duffy. Chuck graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa. During his college years, he served with the Air Force in France an experience that started his love of traveling and living abroad. After college, he joined the Foreign Service and served as a diplomat in Laos and in multiple locations in Japan including Tokyo, Sapporo, Yokohama and Kobe. He later became a banker, first with JP Morgan in New York, Tokyo, and Hong Kong and then with Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh and Tokyo. After banking, he became a partner at the executive search firm of Heidrick and Struggles and opened their Tokyo office. At the end of his career, he was the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. In Huntsville, Chuck served as the President of Osher Life Long Learning Institute at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he taught a wide variety of classes and held several volunteer administrative positions. He was also President of the Magnolia Trace Resident Council and led a discussion group for many years.
Chuck was preceded in death by his beloved wife of forty-three years, Matsuko (Kabayama); brother Thomas; and sister, Mary O’Leary, both of Davenport, Iowa.
Survivors include his son, Christopher (Min Jin Lee) of New York, New York; grandson, Samuel of New York, New York; brother, Brian (Noel) of Huntsville, Alabama; sisters, Patricia Sundstrom (Walt) of Madison, Wisconsin and Katie Cook of Davenport, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at Magnolia Trace on Saturday, Aug. 24th, at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association, Osher Life Long Learning Institute or the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.
