Leonard Ray Shanes, age 81, of Florence, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Magnolia Shanes. Survivors are his sons, Leonard A. Shanes (Karinda) and Ray R. Shanes; grandchildren; A’isha, Rayquan, Dante, Rayneka, Armondo, Quintin and several great-grandchildren. Following his graduation from high school, Sonny proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, and assigned to the 8th Battalion, 7th Artillery (HAWK) under the 4th U.S. Army, where he specialized in the HAWK surface-to-air missile defense system. Upon completing his military service, Sonny built a diverse professional career, working with American Airlines and Piedmont Airlines at the Nashville and Chicago airports, the U.S. Census Bureau, and Chrysler Corporation.
Sonny attended ITC, where he completed his high school education. Following his military service, he continued his academic pursuits at Athens State College, Alabama Christian College, and the International Career Institute.
Sonny embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. He had a passion for travel, fishing, and automobiles- particularly race cars, sports cars, and luxury vehicles. Known for his sense of style, he enjoyed dressing elegantly while also appreciating a sporty look. Sonny thrived in the company of others and was often the life of the party, bringing laughter, warmth, and energy wherever he went. During his younger years, he actively participated in sports and remained a devoted fan throughout his life, enjoying watching all types of sporting events.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the relatives, friends, caregivers, and loved ones whose support, kindness, prayers, and compassion provided comfort and strength during Sonny’s life and throughout this difficult time. Your love and presence are deeply appreciated and will always be remembered.
