Scottie Crocker, a devoted Christian and lover of the mountains of North Carolina, passed away in Huntsville, Alabama on Sunday, August 28 at the age of 78. She is survived by her beloved brother William Crocker, daughter Jennifer Parker (Robert), daughter Megan Torgerson (Bill), and grandchildren Cory and Emma Parker, and Charlotte and Izzy Torgerson. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Willie Beatrice Crocker.
Scottie was born in Troy, Alabama where her father William was a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. Scottie moved around a lot with her family as a child and stops included places such as Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, March Air Force Base in Riverside, California, the Panama Canal Zone, and Warrington, England. Scottie graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama.
Scottie’s time in England made a big impression on her, and she became an avid consumer of English teas. When guests came to her home, she was known for putting on an English accent and asking, “Would you like a spot of tea?” Scottie always had a beautiful home and loved decorating. She loved to tend to her garden and potted plants.
Scottie was in the company of little dogs for the last two decades of her life. First was an Australian Terrier named River Birch and then later a Bichon Frise named Blue.
In 1993, Scottie moved to Asheville, North Carolina where she lived for over twenty-five years. She was a longtime active participant in the Biltmore Baptist Church and Lake Hills Church. She was a regular reader of the Bible, consistently did devotionals, and talking about Jesus was one of her favorite topics.
Scottie enjoyed many of the outdoor activities available to her in the Asheville area. She owned a green Old Town Canoe that she frequently used on the French Broad River. She was a longtime passholder at both The North Carolina Arboretum and the Biltmore Estate. She enjoyed walking the grounds of both places and often took visiting friends and family on tours of the estate. Her love of nature included hiking, and she was a member of the High Country Hikers. She enjoyed collecting patches for the peaks she’d climbed and some of her favorite places to hike were Dupont State Park, Graveyard Fields, Shining Rock, and Mt. Pisgah. While other hikers packed more traditional snacks such as sandwiches, Scottie was known for bringing a bag of nuts, a boiled egg with salt and pepper, a banana, and for wrapping her water bottle in tin foil to keep her drink cold. Scottie’s sense of adventure also led her to raft the Colorado River with a group that included her daughter Megan and brother William. Scottie and her brother were always very close and she treasured her relationship with him.
The family will be receiving friends at First Baptist Church Athens (201 Hobbs Street East, Athens, AL 35611) on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at 10:00AM, with the memorial service following at 11:00.
