Mary Louise Payne
(August 15, 1922 – February 19, 2015)
Louise was married to the late Samuel Frederick (Fred) Payne, former high school teacher, coach, and later Marion County Bank Board of Directors member and cashier of the bank. Together they raised four surviving children, Frieda Louise Payne Raue, John Charles Payne, Elizabeth (Liba) Love Payne Peters, and Lewis Fredrick Payne. Louise received a Registered Nurse diploma from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a B. S. degree from Athens College in Athens, Alabama. She served as assistant to the nursery superintendent at Mercy Hospital, nurse at McNease-Robertson Hospital in Fayette, Alabama, Director of Nursing at Lister Hill Hospital in Hamilton, Alabama, and nursing instructor at the Northwest Technical College also in Hamilton. After 29 years in Hamilton, upon her retirement she cared for her mother, Bess Crane, in Marvin, North Carolina, and later retired to Mobile, Alabama, where she has resided near her daughter, Frieda, for the past 26 years. As a child, Louise became a member of Banks Presbyterian Church in Marvin. As a married couple, Fred and Louise were active members of the Hamilton United Methodist Church. As a resident of Mobile, Louise was an active participant at Springhill Baptist Church becoming highly involved in the Senior Adults department. In every community Louise lived in, she took her nursing oath, the Florence Nightingale Pledge, “… to devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care,” seriously. She faithfully applied this oath in her nursing career and adapted the concepts of the pledge to be used as a calling from God to care for and contribute to the communities she lived in and to the lives of the people she touched. She gave many hours of her time and talents to the Home of Grace in Mobile, Mobile Assistance League Tender Loving Care doll program, American Red Cross, and March of Dimes. Her hobbies included book club, art classes, cake decorating, sewing and traveling with friends and family. Other surviving members of her family include her sons-in-law, Frank Raue and Ron Peters; daughter-in-law, Celina Payne; sisters, Margaret Crane Butler and Cornelia Crane Plyler; brother, John Crane; grandchildren, Mary Louise Raue, Frank Raue, Celina Payne (Tim), Melissa Payne, John Peters (Dylan), Stephen Peters, and Julian Payne; and many loving nieces and nephews. The service will be held at the Hamilton United Methodist Church in Hamilton, Alabama. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. with the service following at 1:30. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens of Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Home of Grace, 394 Aldock Road, Eight Mile, AL 36613.
