Lucy Evelyn Smith Rochelle passed away peacefully on May 20, 2019, at the age of 95 in Huntsville, AL.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father Thomas Oscar and Kitty Victoria Smith of Garth, AL, and her husband William Foster Rochelle of Pulaski, TN.
She was born May 25, 1923, in Decatur, AL, where she lived her first 14 years. When her dad passed, they moved to Garth, AL, in the beautiful Paint Rock Valley to live on the family farm. She graduated from Woodville High School in 1940. Then she attended one year of business school. During this same period of time she met her two very best friends for life-Lydia (Mac) Dean and Margaret Haines.
Evelyn met Billy Rochelle, the one and only love of her life, in Huntsville and they married in 1946.
They made their home in Huntsville and raised a daughter and a son.
She was very passionate and active in the Hunt Springs Chapter of DAR for many years. She was an officer for five years.
She also volunteered at the Madison County Records Center for many years for her good friend Rhonda Larkin.
She co-wrote a book with two of her friends titled “Paint Rock Valley Pioneers.”
She was a member of Holmes Street Methodist Church.
What we will miss the most was her sense of humor-she will always be remembered as our family comedian.
Evelyn Rochelle is survived by her daughter Ann Foster Rochelle Graves (Carey); her son David Thomas Rochelle (Melissa Hughes); step-grandson Joshua Davis (Erin) and their two sons Hays and Callan; step-grandson Gabe Davis; her extended family in Texas- Cody Graves (Cristi) and their children Ryan, Taylor, and Hunter; Telena Christie and her children Jenavecia and River; cousins, nephews, nieces and especially her favorite cousin Glen Smith of Trenton, AL.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 23, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery in Pulaski, TN, with Rev. Eddie Johnson from Holmes Street Methodist officiating.
Her children would like to express their deepest appreciation for the loving caregivers we have had over the last 10 years at her home and also the staff at Regency Retirement Village for the last eight months.
We especially love Joyce Rutland, our cousin, who helped take care of Mother for over eight years.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Holmes Street Methodist Church Building Fund, 501 Holmes Street NE, Huntsville, AL 35801.
