Funeral service for Elizabeth (Lib) Hamilton Brett, age 85, will be graveside in Ripley Cemetery on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at 11 a.m. with Spry Funeral Home directing, Kenny Baskins officiating and acknowledgements by Fred Bickley III.
Lib passed away on Feb. 13, 2016, at her residence. She was born in the Ripley community to William Floyd and Prudie Hamilton on May 12, 1930. She attended Athens City School (class of 1947), graduated from Athens College in August of 1950, and from George Peabody College for Teachers in August of 1955. She was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church.
In 1950 Lib began her 40-year teaching career at Clements High School. She taught many years at Athens High School, and she finished her career as director and instructor of the Honors Program at Calhoun Community College.
Lib was born to be a teacher. She so loved teaching that she often said she would have taught even if she had never been paid. She taught the high school Sunday school class for years. Later she taught adults in the Fellowship Sunday school class and she led a Thursday morning Bible class for 20 years at Athens First United Methodist Church.
Lib was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ralph, her brother, Brub Hamilton, and her nephew, Brett Hamilton.
She is survived by her son, Dan; granddaughter, Brock Elizabeth; sister, Mary McCoy (Larry); nephews, Bill Hamilton (Theresa), Barry Hamilton (Chris), Mike McCoy, Bruce Hamilton (Allyson); and several grandnieces and a grandnephew.
The family appreciates the care-giving of Barbara Bratcher, Rosa Bozarth, Linda Nave, and Betty Russell.
Pallbearers are Bill Hamilton, Barry Hamilton, Bruce Hamilton, Larry McCoy, Mike McCoy, Walter Walker, Whitt Walker, Robert Searcy, Winfred Crutcher, Gary Hill, Charles Bunnell, Henry Brown and Mark Jackson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Lib’s memory to Athens First United Methodist Church, Lib Brett Scholarship at Athens High School, Hospice of Limestone County, or to a charity of your choice.
