Maryetta graduated from Huntington College with a degree in Mathematics with honors. Her long career serving the US Government on Redstone Arsenal saw her excel as a key participant in the patriot missile program.

She was married to Dan Buchanan in 1963 and was a loving wife for 62 years until his passing in July of 2025.

Maryetta is survived by her children, Danny (Jana), J.E.P. (Sheri) of Huntsville, Alabama, and Mary Shea Gaston (Jackie) of Albertville, Alabama; eight grandchildren, Daniel Buchanan (Laura), Carter Buchanan of Huntsville, James Buchanan of Huntsville, Nathan Buchanan ( Kat) of Birmingham, Anna Chason Buchanan of Huntsville, Morgan Gaston Kreger (Cale) of Birmingham, Virginia Gaston Hagood (L.T.) and Abigail Gaston of Albertville; great-grandsons, Penn Timothy Kreger and Lynn Thomas Hagood III; sister -in-law, Milam Propst of Atlanta; brother-in-law Jim Buchanan (Janet) of Unicoi County Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

Maryetta was all things beautiful. She loved the Lord and was a constant prayer warrior. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved her friends and never met a stranger. She was notorious for striking up a conversation with someone and trying to figure out how they were related. She had a servant’s heart, constantly ensuring the care and inclusion of anyone in her presence. Maryetta loved Easter and Christmas and has left her family with a bounty of treasured traditions. Anyone without family became family for these joyous times. Maryetta became Nana to many who were not directly her own.

She loved and adored all her grandchildren, attending all their activities if humanly possible. Affectionately referred to as Nana and Lala, she loved playing games with them gathered at the family homeplace in Nicholsville, Alabama. Nana/Lala never let the grandchildren win, she was a tough competitor and hated losing any game especially dominoes, UNO, and Bridge.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday April 24, 2026, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville, AL, followed by a Celebration of Life at 3 p.m. A family burial will follow at Old Liberty Cemetery in Nicholsville Alabama.

In lieu of flowers please send memorial donations to Real Life Pregnancy Center, PO Box 1432, Albertville, AL 35950 (reallifecpc.org).
