Victoria Lorene “Vickie” Brunson English

Victoria Lorene “Vickie” Brunson English, 86, of Decatur, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 31, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Vickie was born in Elba, Alabama, to Elizabeth and A.C. “Bud” Brunson, Sr. She married the love of her life, James “Buddy” English, on December 26, 1959. The newlyweds began their life together in Auburn while Buddy completed his final year at Auburn University, and Vickie worked at the Tiger Theater. In 1962, they made Decatur their home, where they built a beautiful life centered around family and spending time in nature.

Vickie was first and foremost a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She chose to stay home while raising her daughter and son, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Family was always at the center of her life, and she was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and later, her great-grandchildren.

When her son was a senior in high school, Vickie began what would become a remarkable 35-year career at Cook’s Natural Science Museum. Through her work, she inspired generations of children, teachers, and families across North Alabama with her love of learning and the natural world. Even today, countless former students and educators still share stories of field trips, lessons, and moments with “Ms. English” that sparked curiosity and left a lasting impression. Her impact reached far beyond the museum’s walls and continues to be felt by so many whose lives she touched.

Vickie also had a lifelong love of collecting Roseville pottery. She enjoyed the thrill of finding a special piece and sharing that passion with her family. Over the years, her collection became much more than pottery. it became a tradition, creating treasured memories and a shared love that continues to connect generations of her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Beth McKenzie (Bo); her son, Jim English (Diedrah); her grandchildren, Victoria McKenzie Tumbleson (Steven), Justin English (Laura) and Daniel English; her great-granddaughters, Joanna and Beatrix; and her brother, Winston Brunson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and A.C. “Bud” Brunson, Sr.; her beloved husband, James “Buddy” English; and her brothers, Buddy Brunson and Greg Brunson.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, in the chapel at First Baptist Church Decatur, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Evergreen Cemetery in Elba, Alabama.
