ATHENS-The first day of school for Athens City Schools students is Thursday, August 6. With the return of classes, motorists should anticipate increased traffic around all schools during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.
According to Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell, there are no changes to school traffic routes for drop-off and pick-up this year. All routes and procedures will remain the same as the 2025-2026 school year.

Chief Pressnell reminds all drivers to slow down and remain extra cautious when traveling in school zones. School zone speed limits will be strictly enforced by APD. Motorists should also stay vigilant for students walking to school.
“The safety of our students is of the utmost importance,” Pressnell said. “Our goal is to have a safe start to the school year for everyone and to do that we need the community’s cooperation on the roadways.”
Drivers are also urged to exercise heightened caution around school buses. State law requires that motorists come to a complete stop when a school bus is stopped with its stop arm extended and lights flashing. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass a stopped school bus loading or unloading children.
Thank you for doing your part to keep Athens safe.
