In Loving Memory of Herb Neu

Herbert Sheldon Neu, “Herb”, a man noted for his compassion and depth of spirit, passed away on December 18, 2025 at his home in Grant, Alabama outside Huntsville. He was born on November 4, 1942 in Goshen, Indiana to Louis Jerome and Marjorie (Fredman) Neu. He later grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. where he attended and graduated from Shorewood High School. When Herb was growing up, following the return of his father from service in WWII, radio occupied much of the sound waves in the Neu home. Inheriting an announcer voice from his father, Herb set his sights early on a career in radio and media. He landed his first job at a radio station at age 17 and continued to work a variety of beginner slots, eventually attending the Milwaukee School of Broadcasting and the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He later joined the Air Force and was assigned to Armed Forces Radio, traveling much of the world. Herb’s later civilian work would remain affiliated with radio but focused in sales and administrative roles. Herb was excited to be a part of pioneering rock formats for FM radio stations in the 1960s and 70s. In his later career he was a developer and manager of marketing and programming services for CNN Radio. Herb eventually became a publisher of local history and arts magazines and books, including a true crime book project he collaborated on with his wife. These research/writing adventures were a source of fun and adventure in his later years. Herb had a great compassion for all living things. He and his wife took in numerous strays and often had more than average numbers in their household. Herb loved to hike and the family along with canines hiked several times each week. In retirement years, Herb found ever more solace, meaning and peace in nature, hatching Monarch butterflies and cultivating pollinator gardens and trying to keep up with the bird-feeder and Hummingbird demands of his bird-filled yard.

Herb is survived by his wife and life-partner of 32 years, Sasha Reynolds-Neu, sons Steven Scott Neu and Max Justin Neu, step-daughter Celeste Nabors, grandsons M. Alexander Schroyer, and Shepherd Archer Neu, granddaughter Jessica Nabors, great-grandchildren Linley and Cohen Schroyer, sister Marianne (Bill) Arpe, and numerous fantastic, interesting and talented nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and otherwise extended family members. He loved and celebrated them all.

A private ceremony is planned for spring to celebrate his life and scatter his ashes.
