Mrs. Barbara Hughes Martin, age 91 of Charlotte, NC passed away quietly and peacefully on Tuesday,
September 2, 2025. Born on June 4, 1934 in Lynchburg, VA, she was a retired speech pathologist with the
Burlington Township, NJ Schools. While living in McMinnville, TN, Mrs. Martin was a member of Clark
United Methodist Church. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Hughes, Sr. and
Alice Hughes, her brother, Walter Hughes, Jr., and her beloved husband of 46 years, Clarence Martin.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Barbara Martin of Charlotte, NC,
son Michael Martin of Stony Point, NC, grandchildren David (Elisabeth Coats) and Victoria Martin,
Michael Martin, Jr., Arielle Jackson, Alina Martin, Autumn Martin, Alyssa Martin and Aiden Martin, and
great grandchildren Natasha Hamilton-Martin, Isaiah, Scarlett and Jordan Jackson, sisters-in-law Mary
Martin of North Augusta, SC, Betty Jo Martin and Jackie Cabell both of McMinnville, TN, and brothers-in-
law Gregory and Danny (Terry) Martin both of McMinnville, TN, Jerry (Averill) Martin of Pemberton, NJ,
and Donald (Eleanor) Martin of Columbia, SC. A host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends
also survive.
Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Dunbar High School in Lynchburg, VA, Hampton Institute (now Hampton
University) and Rutgers University. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the National
Education Association, the New Jersey Education Association, and the American Speech-Language-
Hearing Association (ASHA). Mrs. Martin was one of the first African-Americans to receive the ASHA
certification.
The funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Clark United Methodist
Church. Rev. Alpha Arnett will officiate. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory. The Martin Family
will receive friends on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 10:00 a.m. at Clark United
Methodist Church. Repast at the church will follow immediately after the interment.
