Born on September 18, 1954, in Cookeville, TN, to the late Lloyd Davis Lawson and Amanda Arpha Stout Lawson, Micky was a lifelong resident committed to the betterment of his hometown. A 1972 graduate of Central High School, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where he was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) fraternity and worked at Pigg & Parsons Men’s Clothing Store.
Micky served his country in the Army National Guard and had a passion for umpiring football. After returning to Fayetteville, he joined his parents in operating Lawson’s Department Store, later taking ownership in 1985 and running the business with dedication until his passing.
Beyond his role as a businessman, Micky was a pillar of the community, always striving to improve the lives of those around him. His leadership extended to numerous local boards and civic organizations, where he left an enduring impact. He served on the Fayetteville Gas System Board and continued his service after its merger with Fayetteville Public Utilities (FPU), becoming Vice Chairman in 2007. To further his contributions, he completed the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Credentialed Cooperative Director program in 2005. His expertise in public utilities led to his appointment to the American Public Gas Association’s Public Gas Policy Council, where he served from 2008 to 2009.
Micky’s commitment to Fayetteville went far beyond public utilities. He was actively involved in the Tennessee Elk River Development Board, the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau, Fayetteville Main Street, and the Industrial Development Board. He also played a key role in local governance as a City of Fayetteville Alderman and as Secretary of the Lincoln County Election Commission, ensuring fair and transparent elections for the community.
A man of integrity and unwavering dedication, Micky believed in building a stronger future for Fayetteville. Whether through his business, civic leadership, or volunteer efforts, he worked tirelessly to uplift his hometown. When he wasn’t serving the community, Micky enjoyed hunting, golfing, and fishing—especially spending time on the water. He was also a devoted supporter of UT Football, always cheering on the Vols.
Micky is survived by his daughter, Camille Strong Raby, and her husband, Bryan; grandchildren, Hamilton Bennett Raby and Sterling James Raby; brother, Roy Lawson, and his wife, Shirley; and nieces, Jennifer Culbertson, Jacque Bean, and Mandy Duke. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anita Strong Lawson, his parents, and his brother, Donnie Lawson.
Serving as active pallbearers are Britt Dye, Pat Miller, Jeff Albright, Rodney Hill, Andy Wyatt, and Paul Richardson. Micky Lawson’s legacy is one of service, integrity, and an unwavering love for his community.
