Charley Eli Overman, 79, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021. After complications from Alzheimer’s, he died peacefully within his home with his beloved wife, Ruth and family by his side.

Charley was born April 29, 1941 in Isola, MS to the late, Eli Willis and Annie Mary Williams Overman. He grew up in the Mississippi delta on a farm with his parents and 7 siblings.  After high school, Charley joined the US Army where he served our country in Korea. After leaving the service, he moved to Baltimore, MD where he lived for the next 20 plus years and owned a refrigeration business which supplied appliances to restaurants in the Baltimore and surrounding areas, with help from his nephews, Russell and Scott Overman.  After 30 years from when they first met, Charley was reunited with his teenage sweetheart, Ruth and they were married on June 16, 1990. After relocating to Mobile, Alabama, Charley became a real estate broker for Prudential Cooper.  He enjoyed helping numerous families find their perfect home and was well regarded in the real estate community throughout Mobile and south Alabama. Charley and Ruth moved to Huntsville in 2006.

In addition to his parents, Charley is preceded in death by brothers, Johnny Overman, Danny Overman, and Billy Eugene Overman; two sisters, Ruth Overman Sumerall and Grace Overman Buza; three nephews, David Lee McKee, Jr., Michael Keith Overman, Brian Kraig Hall, and a great niece, Misty Dawn Sumerall. He is survived by his wife Ruth Rogers Overman, stepson Jimmy Howell (Jayne) of Madison, AL and step-grandchildren, Tyler Howell (Courtney) of Huntsville, Jayanna Howell and Hardy Howell of Madison, AL.  He is also survived by two brothers, Hugh Edward Overman (Doris) and Jack Overman, both of Pascagoula, MS; his sister, Nell Hall also of Pascagoula, MS and a host of nieces and nephews.

Before illness curtailed his mind, Charley regularly enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams, the New York Yankees and the New Orleans Saints.  Living in Baltimore also brought about a love for the Colts as well as the Orioles.  Charley was a member of Wooley Springs Baptist Church and he looked forward to worship, Sunday school, and prayer meeting each week. He and Ruth enjoyed traveling to church with their much loved fellow church member, Dixie Mallard. He treasured any time he could spend watching his grandchildren in their activities from their childhood days to college graduation and to his oldest grandchild’s wedding. Charley was very visible in his grandchildren’s lives.

A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Huntsville Memory Gardens with Bro. Tony Boyles officiating. Berryhill Funeral home will be handling arrangements. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Howell, Tyler Howell, Hardy Howell, Lynn Rogers, John Delashaw and Bradley Renfroe.

Charley’s family would like to thank Hospice of North Alabama for the love and care shown to them during Charley’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, Charley’s family requests your expression of love be shown by giving to the mission known as The Hidden Place. The Hidden Place exists to reach children with the gospel and walk with them in their journey towards becoming more like Christ. www.thehiddenplace.org.
