Oran B. Tyler, Jr. – Obituary

Oran B. Tyler, Jr. went to his heavenly home on March 28, 2017, joining his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Peggy S. Tyler, who had died only 12 days earlier. Oran died following a brief and acute illness in Fairhope. He was born Oct. 15, 1929.

Originally from Schulenburg, Texas, Oran attended Texas A&M University, and graduated with a B. S. in Business Administration from the University of Corpus Christi. He joined the U.S. Army and upon receiving his commission as a second lieutenant, proudly served with the 739th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion during the Korean War. After his release from active duty, he pursued a successful career in the carpet fiber technology industry, retiring from Monsanto in 1992.

It was Oran’s career that brought him and his family to Decatur in 1964. As a resident of Decatur, Oran became a dedicated member of his community and church. He was awarded Civitan International’s Distinguished Governor Award for 2001-2002 and 2006-2007. He served on the Board of the Friends of the Regional Hospital, was a member of the Exchange Club and volunteered extensively with the American Red Cross. His efforts also extended to his spiritual home, Ninth Street United Methodist Church, where he served on the church’s board, coordinated attendance records, taught Sunday school and assisted with vacation Bible school.

Oran was preceded in death by his father, Oran B. Tyler, Sr.; his son, Larry Tyler; his mother, Alma Tyler Ramsey; his sister, Jean Tyler Heintze; his brother, Hugh “Pitt” Tyler; and most recently, his wife, Peggy S. Tyler. He is survived by his sons, Rick (Lynn) of Brandon, Mississippi and Tom (Tricia) of Fairhope and his two grandchildren, Shelby and Joshua.

A service honoring his life will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 31st at Roselawn Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last until service time.Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.
