Carolyn Jane Godwin arrived in Hardin County, Tennessee on August 22, 1933; one of eleven children of Joseph Johnson and Cordelia Caldonia Love Godwin, Carolyn would outlive all of her brothers and sisters. She graduated from high school and then, in 1953, was named Miss Hardin County. The following year she married Richard Roy “Cotton” Crunk on December 20, 1954.
Except for a period of time during which she lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carolyn spent her life in Hardin County, primarily in Savannah although she did live in the Walnut Grove community for a time. Her interests were as varied as her talents; she enjoyed modeling and was even featured in Life Magazine and was an avid sports enthusiast. Not one to just be a spectator, Carolyn loved horses and was once a barrel racer.
Over the years Carolyn was employed with several different companies including Crunk Real Estate, Strout Realty, Parris Manufacturing, and Edwin Ledbetter’s law office. Eventually her focus turned toward real estate and investment management. She co-founded the local Business and Professional Woman’s Club and the Hardin County Board of Realtors as well as serving on the Board of Directors for Central Bank for over ten years. As the mother of four girls, she worked with the Band Boosters for the Hardin County High School Band and the Girl Scouts. Her dedication to the Lord’s work manifested itself through her seventy plus years of membership at the Savannah Church of Christ where her generosity and love for her fellow man endeared her to everyone.
Her husband died on November 26, 1997; Carolyn followed on July 6, 2015 at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 14 days. She leaves behind her four daughters, Sandra Jo Crunk, Bonnie Faye Young and her husband, Mike, Carol Jane Crunk, and Lela Beth Crunk, all of Savannah, Tennessee as well as her granddaughters, Katie Benson and her husband, Arvie, and Shelby Caperton and her husband, Jimmy, her two grandsons, Clay Young and Nick Anderson, all of Savannah, Tennessee and her two great-granddaughters, Ava Beth Young and Carolyn Lily Caperton.
Other than her parents and husband, Carolyn was preceded in death by her sisters, Kate Godwin, Mary Walker, Mildred Gean, Evelyn Sue Godwin, and Christine Spencer, and her brothers, Sam Godwin, Joe Welch Godwin, Bob Godwin, Dan Godwin, and Billy Godwin.
