Dr. Wilbur A. Tincher, Jr., for many years active in the education and civic life of Auburn and Lee County, AL, died Friday, August, 12, 2016, at Whitesburg Gardens in Huntsville, AL. He was 88.
Dr. Tincher’s wishes were to be cremated with subsequent interment of cremains in Frankfort Cemetery in Frankfort, Kentucky.
A native of Kentucky, he was born September 15, 1927, in Frankfort and was the son of Wilbur A. and Louise Feck Tincher. He was educatied in the public schools of Franklin County, KY, Transylvania University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and the University of Kentucky, from which he received the AB degree in English and music, and the MEd and EdD degrees in higher education administration.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Employed as a high school teacher and elementary school principal in Kentucky, as supervisor of teacher certification in the Kentucky State Department of Education, and as assistant professor and coordinator of student personnel at Eastern Kentucky State University in Richmond, he came to Auburn University in 1958 as assistant professor of education. Subsequently, he served as director of Institutional Research, dean of Student Services, and professor and head of the department of Educational Leadership; he retired from Auburn University in 1987 after 29 years of service and was designated Professor Emeritus.
He was past president and life member of the Alabama Association for Counseling and Development. He also served as president of the Alabama College Personnel Association, secretary of the National Association for Institutional Research, was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary, and was a life member of the National Education Association and Phi Delta Kappa education honorary.
Dr. Tincher served as a member of the board of directors of the Auburn United Fund, the East Alabama Cooperative Housing, Inc., and, for twenty-five years, the Presbyterian Community Ministry, which he helped found and which he served as secretary and three times as president. He was a long-time member and past president of the Auburn Rotary Club, and a member and secretary-treasurer of the Auburn Outing Club.
He was a long-time member of the Auburn and the Opelika Arts Associations. Also, he was a member of the Auburn University Retiree Association and served on the board of directors and as treasurer. He was a member of Auburn’s First Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, ruling elder, associate organist, and trustee.
Dr. Tincher was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Strohmeier Tincher; father, Wilbur A. Tincher, Sr.; mother, Louise Feck Tincher; and brother, Donald R. Tincher. Berryhill Funeral Home assisted the family.
