W.L. ‘Bill’ Barnett, 94, of Vinemont, AL died Friday, September 16, 2016 at his residence. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 20th at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Rev. Dennis Trimble officiating with interment in Ebenezer Cemetery. Viewing will be from 10-11 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 9 p.m. at Cullman Funeral Home, 461 U.S. Hwy. 278 East on the evening of Monday, September 19th.
W.L. Barnett was born December 28, 1921 in Cullman, Alabama, son of the late James Francis and Lena Elizabeth Clark Barnett. He served in the 389th U.S. Army Infantry Division during WW11. His company was attached to the U.S. Navy and participated in the 1944 invasion of the Phillipine Islands of Leyete and Luzon and, following the war, the occupation of Japan. Following his discharge in 1946, he worked as an electrician at the Steel Mill in Detroit, Michigan. He worked in the Panama Canal Zone in the late 1950’s where he joined the I.B.E.W and remained a member in good standing until his death. He also worked on the construction of the Radar Station in Thule, Greenland.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Ann Horchler Barnett and Alice Fern Banks Barnett; seven sisters, Pauline (Cecil) Porter, Rubie (Luther) Nichols, Ethelene (Floyd) King, Genice (Oscar) Tankersley, Rachel (Doyle) Smith, Obera Barnett, Rilla Mae Quick and brothers, Eugene (Mattie Hart), Hubert (Ruth Harbison), Wilford and Maurice Barnett.
He is survived by brother-in-law, Dee (Rilla Mae) Quick; sisters-in-law, Pat Stone (Hubert), Joyce Johnson Strode (Wilford), Sandra Story (Maurice) and Linda Edwards (Maurice); children, Marthy Ringo, Douglas (Brenda) Barnett, Robert Barnett, Barbara (Ray) Higdon, David Barnett; step-daughters, Wynona (Richard) Little, Yvonne (Roger) Hayes; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
