NWSCC Upward Bound student plans to earn degree before high school diploma

PHIL CAMPBELL-At just 17 years old, Mary Elizabeth Fisher plans to graduate from Northwest Shoals Community College (NWSCC) with an Associate in Science degree days before receiving her high school diploma from Phil Campbell High School.
Fisher, the Valedictorian of Phil Campbell High School’s Class of 2025, is a first-generation college student who has excelled academically while participating in Dual Enrollment and the Upward Bound Phil Campbell Project.

She has earned numerous accolades, including the American Chemical Society Award, and is a member of the Phi Theta

Kappa Honor Society at NWSCC. As Vice President of her senior class, she has been involved in multiple organizations such as Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society, and the Grass and Roots Project—a program she founded to provide companionship to elderly residents in assisted living homes.

A multi-sport athlete, Mary Beth has played Varsity Volleyball, Basketball, and Golf, earning the highest GPA award for her athletic participation. Her service efforts have been recognized at the state level, securing 2nd Place in the FBLA State Competition for her Service Project. She has dedicated time to various volunteer organizations, including Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), as well as numerous community outreach programs.
Balancing rigorous coursework, extracurricular commitments, and community service, Fisher has demonstrated resilience and determination in pursuing her goal of becoming a pharmacist. She is preparing to apply to pharmacy schools at Samford University, Union University, and Lipscomb University.
Fisher credits the Upward Bound Program for providing essential resources such as tutoring, free college courses, and cultural experiences. Her achievement exemplifies the impact of educational programs in supporting student success.
