LIMESTONE COUNTY-On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at approximately 6:20 p.m., Deputies and Investigators with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 14000 block of Parker Road regarding a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, deputies located an individual in the yard suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Deputies immediately rendered lifesaving aid by applying a tourniquet to stop the bleeding until Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene.
The victim and witnesses identified the alleged shooter as Michael Alan Smith, 53, of Athens, Alabama, who remained on scene and was still in possession of the firearm. Deputies detained Smith without incident and secured the weapon.
Investigators responded to process the scene and conduct interviews. The investigation determined the shooting stemmed from a civil dispute. Smith reportedly went to the victim’s residence to confront him regarding the dispute and entered the victim’s home. After being ordered to leave the residence, Smith allegedly produced a pistol and shot the unarmed victim.
The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.
Probable cause was established to charge Smith with Assault First Degree. Smith was transported to the Limestone County Jail where he was booked pending a bond hearing before a judge.
Statement from Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin:
“I want to commend the deputies who responded to this call for providing lifesaving measures to the victim and safely taking the alleged offender into custody. Bringing a firearm into a civil dispute and shooting an unarmed person is reckless and extremely dangerous. I’m thankful this incident did not result in a loss of life, which is always a very real possibility in situations like this.”
