Mavis Fleeman Daniell – Obituary

Mavis Fleeman Daniell, 85, of Huntsville, passed away January 23, 2018 at her home surrounded by family.  Mavis was born in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Hershel Thomas Fleeman and Cleo Horne Fleeman. As a young girl, her family moved to Hawkinsville, Georgia.  She graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville with a degree in Business Education. In 1953 she married Dwight Daniell, Jr. of Dublin, Georgia, and began her teaching career in Bogart, Georgia, teaching second grade in the morning and high school business in the afternoon. In 1959, Mavis and family moved to Huntsville. She taught sixth grade at Highlands Elementary for ten years.  She was a member of Huntsville’s First Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and worked tirelessly on the historical room for the church.  She was known as the “church historian.” She loved Huntsville and its history; she often served as a tour guide of the downtown Huntsville’s Twickenham District.  She was a member of Du Midi, La Sertoma, Huntsville Historical Society, Antiques Club, the Garden Club and Huntsville Retired Teachers’ Association.  She served on the board of Presbyterian Apartments and Maxwell Place Condominium. In more recent years, she enjoyed playing Onze with friends and family.  She will be remembered by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for her endless love and support.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Daniell, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Diane Moody Daniell; brother, Hershel Fleeman, Jr.; and sister, Elizabeth Slade. She is survived by her children, David Daniell of Fairhope; Larry Daniell (Marsha) of Huntsville; Mavis Dawn Daniell Tincher (John) of Dadeville; brother, Ronald Fleeman (Connie) of Hawkinsville, GA; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, February 3 at First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. The service will follow in the Sanctuary at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 307 Gates Avenue, Huntsville, AL 35801.
