MADISON COUNTY-On March 2, 2025, at 8:55 p.m., the Huntsville Police Department arrested and charged John Mitchell Rigdon, 68, with Criminal Trespassing in the third degree following an incident at Crestwood Hospital.
Prior to the arrest, Mr. Rigdon had been discharged from Crestwood Hospital earlier in the day. However, he subsequently returned to the hospital despite being previously trespassed. Crestwood Hospital personnel contacted the Huntsville Police Department, requesting their assistance. Upon arrival, officers arrested the subject and transported him to the Madison County Sheriff’s Facility for processing and detention.
Upon arrival at the Madison County Jail Facility, MCSO medical personnel determined that the subject had a history of medical issues and was suffering from a serious terminal condition and placed him in the jail infirmary. An on-call doctor was notified and provided medical orders for appropriate treatments for Mr. Rigdon.
At approximately 4:30 a.m. this morning, March 3, 2025, the subject was found unresponsive in his medical cell. Sheriff’s Detention officers and medical staff members immediately began life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the subject was pronounced dead.
Sheriff Kevin Turner states, “An in-custody death is always difficult for everyone involved: facility staff members, medical staff, and emergency first responders. We are extremely saddened to report the death of Mr. Rigdon and send our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death. The cause of death is currently unknown and will be determined by the autopsy and toxicology reports that the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences will conduct.
