John D. Brown – Obituary

John D. Brown, 88, passed peacefully from this life on July 25, 2016 , at his residence. The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 26th, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Mayfair Church of Christ. A Celebration of Life will follow Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the church with visitation from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, Huntsville.

Mr. Brown, a lifelong resident of Madison County, was born on May 1, 1928. He was a member of the Mayfair Church of Christ since the 1950’s and helped start their youth program. He also served as a deacon of missions for many years. Mr. Brown was a 1949 graduate of Huntsville High School, and worked at Thiokol Chemical Corporation for 35 years advancing from line worker to Manufacturing Manager.

He served his country faithfully from 1950-1956 in the Alabama National Guard 151st Combat Engineer Battalion during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant First Class and was honored with the Korean Service Medal 2 Bronze Star and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

After his retirement, Mr. Brown worked with his son, Michael Brown, MD and was known and loved by all who met him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Susie Brown, brothers, Clyde, Garland and James Brown. His wife of 55 years, Jeanette (Jan) Hardison Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce West Brown, daughter,Amy (David) Hendrixson, son, Dr. Michael (Kay) Brown, all of Madison. Mr. Brown was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren: Jonathan Brown, Huntsville, Matthew Brown, Dallas Texas, Rachel Farhat (Josh), Huntsville, Taylor (Sara) Hendrixson, St. Louis, Missouri, and Beth (Carter) Thomas, of Franklin, Tennessee. He is survived, also, by one brother, Kelley (Nancy) Brown, of Huntsville. The family wishes to thank Eric Shaka of Senior Helpers, Sarita Timmons, and Margaret Lightfoot for the devoted care they have given to Mr. Brown during these last few years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Agape, Baja Missions, Childhaven, Madison Academy, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, all of which are special to John D. and his family.
