DavidDavid Joshua Honey, Sr., died February 8, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was 93.

The celebration of Mr. Honey’s life will begin February 10, 2013, with visitation of family and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at Highland Park Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ted Vafeas and the Rev. Brett Pitman officiating. Interment will follow in Colbert Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will include Josh Honey, III, Ged Grimmitt, Clay Williams, Christian Williams, Kyle Oakley, and Tim Barnes. Honorary pallbearers are David Sockwell and Avery Michael.

Mr. Honey was born on June 21, 1919, to the late Frank Little and Margaret Adeline Archer Honey in Colbert Heights. He married Dorothy D. Doss in 1947 and raised his family in Colbert Heights, serving as a deacon while attending Colbert Heights Baptist Church. After moving to Muscle Shoals in 1987, he attended Highland Park Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran—serving in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Northern France, and Normandy—from January 1941 until war’s end, and was the recipient of four Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He was a Mason for 65 years and retired from TVA after 38 years.

Mr. Honey was a good and honest man, a kind neighbor, and an affectionate husband and father. He quietly served his country, his community, and his church. His love of life was clearly visible through his loyalty and devotion to his family and his service to his fellowman. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy D. Honey of Muscle Shoals; daughter, Brenda Crow (Glen) of Sparta, Tennessee; son, David Honey, Jr., (Sandra), and daughter, Melanie Montgomery (Bobby), both of Tuscumbia; six grandchildren, Chelbi Andersen (Rod), Josh Honey III (Cindy), Kim Williams (Clay), Cheri Grimmitt (Ged), Kirby Montgomery, and Katie Oakley (Kyle); and seven great-grandchildren, Christian and Belle Williams, Caleb and Abby Honey, Noah and Lucy Grimmitt, and Addison Simpson; and special nephew, Gene Barnes (Becky). He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Adeline Honey, and his nine siblings, Jimmy, Frank, Effie, Ollie, Jackie Mae, Della, Walker, Pearl, and Louise.

The family would like to thank Keller Hospice, ElderCare, Dr. Larry Carmichael, Dr. Jerry Williams and Dr. Sherrod. A special thanks goes to a very special caretaker, Sherry Owens.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Salvation Army, or the charity of your choice.
