MONTGOMERY-The Alabama Department of Public Health has received numerous requests for information related to vaccination rates as a result of the person from TN traveling through Alabama.
In an effort to reduce the need to respond to individual requests in order to allow staff to focus on response, the following information is being provided based on the questions asked so far.
A Q&A document will be prepared and posted on next week at http://www.alabamapublichealth.gov/immunization/

  1. Multiple requests have been made for measles vaccination rates.  The information provided is a snapshot of a period in time and may not accurately reflect the total immunization rate.  The data is based on best available and what has been submitted to the ImmPrint, which is the ADPH immunization register.  The data for 5 year olds between 08/01/2017 through 05/31/2018 shows a state total of 71 percent.    The results for this same time period for 5 through 18 year olds is 68 percent for the state.  (Note:  Results not entered into ImmPrint are not reflected in these totals.  The ADPH recommends use of the School Survey results which are known to be more complete and thus more accurate.  Also see the Disclaimer below which explains the reasons for lower percentage results in ImmPrint).
  2. In addition to requests for Alabama’s MMR or measles vaccination rates, ADPH has received requests for interpretation of the annual School Entry Survey located athttp://www.alabamapublichealth.gov/immunization/school-entry-survey.html This survey is completed yearly and is available per county with a district level and state total.  It provides information about the total children enrolled in Alabama public and private schools.  Currently, school entry survey results are available for 2014 through 2017.  The surveys are completed by the schools using the instructions provided on the ADPH Immunization webpage at the link provided above.  Based on the information submitted, in 2017-18,  92.83 percentof all enrolled children were up to date on required vaccinations as documented on the State of Alabama Certificate of Immunization (COI).
  3. ADPH routinely investigates all reports of diseases and conditions that are included in the notifiable disease rules.  Between April 1, 2018 and April 1, 2019, ADPH investigated 211 reports of measles.  There were 0 confirmed cases.  As of 04/26/2019, ADPH has had 0 confirmed cases and has 34 open investigations.  For a list of vaccine preventable diseases investigated and the number of cases please go to http://www.alabamapublichealth.gov/immunization/cases.htm

Disclaimer:  The accuracy of results is only as good as the quality of the data entered.  Due to the absence of a state requirement for the use of ImmPRINT and the entry of all immunization data regardless of payer source or age, please use precaution in the interpretation of the results.
