Sheldon ‘Bud’ Duns Smith, 80, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on April 6, 2026, just days after watching the launch of Artemis II — the most recent program to which he proudly contributed.

Bud was born in San Mateo, California, to Sheldon ‘Bud’ and Helen Smith on October 4, 1945. He grew up in California and New York, enjoying the outdoors and frequent camping trips with his parents, younger brother, Dennis, and younger sister, Dawn.

After graduating from Massapequa High School in 1963, Bud earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1968 and an MBA from Alabama A&M University in 1981.

Bud was a pioneering figure in rocket plume modeling, with a career spanning over 58 years. He contributed to major aerospace programs from the Apollo-era Saturn rockets through the Space Shuttle and into modern systems like the Space Launch System and Artemis missions. His work focused on predicting how rocket plumes affect vehicles and launch environments, helping design safer rockets, spacecraft, and launch facilities. In 2012, Bud was honored with NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award for his significant contributions to flight safety and mission success.

He started his career at Cape Canaveral in Florida then moved with his wife and daughter to Huntsville where he worked for 15 years at Lockheed. He worked as a consultant for several companies, co-founded SECA, and later started Plumetech, developing widely used plume modeling codes and supporting countless tests and missions across NASA and commercial space programs. Beyond his technical impact, he was known as a humble, influential mentor who helped shape generations of engineers. Outside of work, Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, reading, playing cards, traveling the world with his loving wife, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Connie Smith; daughter, Kimberly Smith Pfeiffer; son, Dale Smith; granddaughters, Alexandra Pfeiffer Hotez (Dan) and Emily Pfeiffer; brother, Dennis Smith; and sister, Dawn Jackson (Greg). He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Sheldon Smith.

A celebration of Bud’s life will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Valley Hill Country Club, 8300 Valley Hill Dr., Huntsville, Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org), the Sheldon ‘Bud’ Smith Space Camp Scholarship Fund (https://rocketcenterfoundation.org/scholarships/#tribute) to help send a child to Space Camp, or a charity of your choice.
