Mize will lead historic Byler Road program and tour September 7

Image result for old Byler RoadFLORENCE-Local historian Joel Mize will conduct a tour of the old Byler Road on
Saturday, Sept. 7.

Participants will meet at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Indian Mound Museum in
Florence (1028 S. Court St.) for a briefing on Paleo, Archaic & Woodland
history in North Alabama, followed by a caravan to sites including various
historic markers.  Sites will include Jackson Military Road at Shoals Creek,
Craig’s Wilderness Inn, Bainbridge (a new historical marker – “Confederate
Army Retreat at Bainbridge” to be dedicated during tour), Peden’s Traveler’s

Rest, Leighton Civil War Museum (new venue, work in progress), LaGrange Bluff Shelter, LaGrange College site (hear Robert Steen & opportunity to buy his book), Hatton Hill, Old Bethel at Gaines Trace Crossroad, Byler Tollroad historic marker, Vandiver’s Mill, Denton Hollow (Major Wm Russell’s grave), Byler’s Gap & homestead, Rock Springs cemetery (Capt. John Byler’s marker plus graves of 5 soldiers of the American Revolution).  Tour will last about 6-1/2 hours including a lunch stop.   An 18 passenger van and an 8 passenger
