Oscar Meredith Jr. – Obituary

oscarOscar Meredith Jr., age 91, departed this life on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 1, 1925, to Oscar Meredith Sr. and Sarah Freeman in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

Oscar accepted Christ at an early age at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. He was the ninth of eleven children. Oscar married Ora K. Appleberry in 1947, and to this union four children were born. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in Europe and was a member of the American Legion. Oscar was employed by Robbins Tire and Rubber Company for 42 years. After retiring, he was employed by the City of Florence parking facilities until age 85. As a member of St. Paul, he sang with the senior choir, mass choir, and the male chorus. He had a beautiful tenor voice and loved his church family. He truly believed in family, was always cheerful, and offered a positive kind word. He lived a fruitful life.

Oscar was proceeded in death by one son, Charles Edward.

He leaves to cherish his memories wife of 69 years, Ora K. Meredith; children, Oscar James (Anna), Tuscumbia, Alabama, Patsy Hawkins (Anthony), Huntsville, Alabama, and Janis Harden (Samuel Jr.) Florence, Alabama; sisters, Christine Anderson, Decatur, Illinois, and Estella Lloyd, Tuscumbia, Alabama; brothers-in-law, James Appleberry, Fort Worth, Texas, and Eric Appleberry, Mark Appleberry, Michael Appleberry, and Tracy Appleberry, all of Chattanooga, Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Marylen Appleberry and Annie Pearl Bowman, Chattanooga, Tennessee; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at

Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Florence, Alabama.

Funeral services for Mr. Meredith will be

noon Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at

St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Tuscumbia, Alabama, with the

Rev. Keeton Stewart officiating.

Burial is in St. Paul Church Cemetery, Tuscumbia, Alabama.

The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.

The public viewing will be Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Florence, is directing.
