MONTGOMERY-The committee handling the impeachment investigation of Governor Robert Bentley has denied motions by Bentley lawyers. The House Judiciary Committee denied efforts by Bentley to suspend the proceedings and to remove three representatives.
The committee also hit Bentley with lengthy requests for documents about funding to former Bentley senior adviser Rebecca Mason and other items.
State Auditor Jim Zeigler, a vocal critic of Bentley, said Wednesday:
“The House Judiciary Committee is now moving aggressively with an investigation of Bentley. This is the first major movement toward impeachment.
“The Bentley motions to suspend the investigation and to remove three legislator who had signed the impeachment petition were frivolous motions. The Bentley lawyers forget that impeachment is a legislative process, not a court of law.
“It is important that the impeachment move forward aggressively before the Feds come here and take over a state problem. If there is delay, the Feds could do for Alabama what we should do for ourselves – oust an incompetent and corrupt governor. We don’t need federal help to do that.”
Zeigler initiated an Ethics Commission investigation of Bentley when he filed a report of alleged Bentley ethics violations received by his office in April. That investigation is on-going.
