Melva June Raines Profile PhotoMelva June Raines, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, in Selmer, Tennessee. She was born on June 6, 1931, in Booneville, Mississippi, and went on to dedicate her life to caring for others and nurturing the family she so deeply loved.

Melva spent her entire life in Hardeman County, where her commitment to service and her unwavering devotion to those around her left a legacy that will be cherished for generations. Professionally, she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the healthcare industry. Yet it was her role as a family caregiver that her loved ones remember most fondly; Melva’s diligence, compassion, and selflessness defined her life both inside and outside of her home.

Her caring spirit and steadfast love extended beyond her immediate family to her church and community. Melva was a proud member of the Golden Sounds Choir at Bolivar First Baptist Church, where her voice and presence added warmth and strength to every gathering. Her devotion to her faith and her neighbors was evident in each moment she gave of herself, sharing comfort and kindness with all who knew her.

Above all, Melva’s greatest joy was found in caring for her family. She is survived by her children: Melva Crouse (Robert [d.]), Paulette Nuckolls (Terry Lee), and Keith Raines (Lisa). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Brian, Chris, Justin (Vicki), Whitney (Chris), Turner (Casey), Joseph (Lyndsey), John Preston (Kharis), and Allyson. Melva also delighted in the company of her great-grandchildren: Shepard, Ruby, Jackson Cate, Ryder, Eldridge, Austin, Reese, Banks, Brittney, and Michael. She is also survived by her dear sister, Ann Puckett. The bonds she built with her family remain a testament to her loving heart and gentle guidance.

Melva was preceded in death by her parents, Otha Napoleon Turner and Pauline Gault Turner; her brothers, Jewel and Willie; her sisters, Ellen, Clara, and Mavis; and her two sons, Edward Duane and Michael. Though they are no longer with us, their memories live on in the stories and shared moments that Melva carried close throughout her life.

To honor Melva June Raines’ remarkable life, visitation will be held on Sunday, July 5, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Bolivar, Tennessee. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at the same location. Interment will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Silerton, Tennessee, beginning at 2:30 pm.

Melva’s enduring spirit, compassionate heart, and life of service have left an indelible mark on all who were privileged to know her. As we gather to celebrate her life, we remember a woman of quiet strength, unyielding faith, and deep love—a legacy that lives on in her family and her community.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. (www.stjude.org)
