Pallbearers will be Drew Cowan, Hunter Cowan, Trey Cowan, Jason Cowan, Jeremy Cowan and Scott Rutherford.

Born on February 6, 1947, Donnie’s life was defined by determination, hard work, and perseverance. Growing up with very little, he learned at an early age that success would require sacrifice and grit. He often spoke of working in the school lunchroom as a boy so he could afford to eat lunch, an experience that helped shape his strong work ethic and resolve to build a better future.

After serving his country as a Military Policeman in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, Donnie returned home and met Bonnie shortly after returning home from Vietnam. He devoted himself to providing for his family. He worked at Monsanto/NovA along the Tennessee River in Decatur, often working overtime and saving every dollar he could. Refusing to let his circumstances define him, he steadily built a life marked by discipline, perseverance, and determination.

In 1983, Donnie purchased his first rental property. Through years of wise investments, hard work, and countless hours of labor, he grew that single property into more than thirty rental homes and ten rent-to-own houses. Yet those who knew him best understood that what mattered most was not what he owned, but how he treated people. Many tenants experienced his generosity firsthand through flexible payment arrangements, second chances, and a willingness to help during difficult times. He quietly supported causes that benefited disadvantaged children and frequently helped others obtain food, medicine, and other necessities when they were in need.

Donnie was baptized at Fairview Baptist Church at the age of twelve and carried with him a belief in helping others, often choosing to do so quietly and without recognition.

He was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who spent countless hours coaching baseball and encouraging young athletes through the years. Few things brought him more pride than watching his sons and grandchildren grow and succeed.

As the years passed, some of Donnie’s happiest memories were made alongside his beloved wife, Bonnie. Together they enjoyed weekends filled with music, dancing, laughter, and friendship. Whether sharing stories and Diet Mountain Dew with friends at McDonald’s each morning or dancing the night away to White Lightning at the VFW, Donnie found joy in life’s simple pleasures and the people who shared them.

Donnie was preceded in death by his son, Donnie Lynn Cowan, Jr.; his parents, Robert A. Cowan and Gladys H. Cowan; his brother, Ray Cowan; his sisters, Betty J. Hawkins and Elsie L. Evans; and his nephews, Kerry Todd Hawkins and Ronald Cowan.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Sue Cowan; his son, Robert Lee Cowan and wife, Wendy Cowan; his brother, Jerry Cowan; his grandchildren, Ashton Cowan Easterwood, Drew Cowan, Trey Cowan, and Hunter Cowan; his great-grandchildren, Banks Easterwood and Beckett Easterwood; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former tenants whose lives were touched by his kindness.

From humble beginnings, Donnie built a life that reflected resilience, determination, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family. His legacy lives on through the family he loved; the lives he touched, and the countless acts of kindness he extended to others throughout his life.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Special thanks to Enhabit Home Health and Hospice Care for taking such good care of Donnie.

In lieu of flowers, family would like donations to be sent to The Medicine Shop, Decatur, for those unable to cover costs; or to Harry’s Kid’s in care of Flint Church of Christ.
