DECATUR-The City of Decatur, Alabama, is excited to announce the return of its Third Annual Dia de Los Muertos Celebration, a vibrant tribute to this tradition. Following the success of last year’s event, we invite the community to join us for an unforgettable celebration on Saturday, November 2nd, from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, in downtown Decatur.

This year’s event builds upon the success of previous celebrations, promising an even more immersive cultural experience. It is a collaborative effort involving the Hispanic community, the Alabama Center for the Arts, the City of Decatur, the Princess Theater, and various civic and cultural organizations in the Decatur/Morgan County area.

Dia de Los Muertos, or “The Day of The Dead,” honors the lives of those who have passed and has gained popularity across Latin America and beyond, especially after being featured in the Disney film “Coco.” To kick off the festivities, there will be a FREE screening of “Coco” at The Princess Theater at 10:00 AM on Satuday, November 2nd.

At the top of the steps of the Alabama Center for the Arts, 15 talented students from the Decatur City, Athens City, and Morgan County School system will compete for the title of Queen in this year’s Quinceañera pageant, showcasing their grace, culture, and spirit. The Alabama Center for the Arts will also host “Un Altar De La Comunidad,” a community altar where attendees can contribute tributes to their departed loved ones. The pageant begins at 2:00 PM.

The main event will take place on 2nd Avenue from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Downtown Decatur will come alive with music, authentic food trucks, over 30 vendors, art activities provided by The Carnegie, and a “Community Corner” for local organizations. Admission to the Third Annual Dia de Los Muertos Celebration is free, allowing everyone to join in the festivities.

We are thrilled to announce the return of the dynamic Chinelos dancers, followed by Grupo 100f, a live band taking the stage at 5:00 PM and again at 6:45 PM. A dance competition will begin at 7:45 PM, with sign-ups taking place on-site.

Join us for a memorable evening of culture, community, and celebration at the Third Annual Dia de Los Muertos Celebration in downtown Decatur on November 2nd. This extraordinary experience is one you won’t want to miss! There is also a must-see surprise in store that you won’t want to miss once the sun sets.
