Suspect In Stolen Truck Makes The Rounds Of Several Bank ATMs…No Money…Lots Of Damage

ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement regarding a suspect who tried to break into several ATM machines at various banks throughout the city:

“This morning shortly before 2:00am the police department was notified that the alarm on the ATM at Region’s Bank on Jefferson had been activated. While officers were responding to the bank Region’s security notified us there was a person attempting to get into the ATM with a hammer.

When Officers Megan Meredith and Jim Kennedy arrived they located a male standing in front of the open ATM. There was also a white Chevrolet Blazer in the drive thru lane. The male had a Camouflaged ski mask rolled-up away from his face. regionsThey also saw a hammer and a wrench by the man’s feet. The officers said the man was messing with the rolled receipt paper in the ATM.

He told officers it was his first night on the job and he was trying to fix the ATM. Officers then took the man into custody after a brief struggle. There were no injuries. Officers then looked at a white Chevrolet Blazer that was parked close to the first nationalATM machine. They noticed the vehicle had damage to the front and steam was coming from the radiator. The back of the vehicle was also damaged and there was brick on the vehicle.

Other officers started checking other locations and located damage to the ATM at Regions Bank on Hobbs Street, Compass Bank’s ATM on Green Street and the south outside wall and ATM at First National Bank on Jefferson Street. Further investigation revealed the Blazer had been stolen from Al’s Transmission on Hobbs Street.

Officers later located a broken window on the front door and a lock damaged at Al’s 779b3e77-3c31-4eb8-867d-91c0dcca2e75Transmissions.

Officers identified the male as David Roy Mitchell. Mitchell was charged with 3 count of criminal mischief 1st degree. One count of criminal mischief 2nd degree, one count of theft of property 1st degree and one count of attempted burglary.

Mitchell was transported to the police department where he was booked and transferred to the county jail. With all the damage caused by Mitchell he was not able to get any money from the ATM’s. Investigators are working with the banks and Al’s Transmission to attempt to determine the cost of the property destroyed. “
