TUSCUMBIA-Dr. Stutts took a break from delivering babies and taking care of new mothers to visit the Colbert County Board of Education. On his visit he wanted to keep the four year tradition of awarding local county school districts with competitive grants. The funds were part of the state education budget. And the funds come with little strings attached. “I am proud to distribute these grants that are not earmarked for certain things and can be spent to benefit K-12 students,” Dr. Stutts said.

92% of state budget funds that schools receive are earmarked and can only be spent on certain projects, i.e. maintenance, transportation or federal programs. “These funds are not earmarked” said Dr. Stutts.

Mr. Jon Hatton, Lauderdale County Schools Superintendent and Mrs. Ann West, Marion County Schools Superintendent were also in attendance to receive their competitive grant awards. During the presentation Dr. Stutts described the process of meeting with the Chairman of Education of both the House and Senate to procure additional funds for District 6 schools and students’ education. “I am very proud to deliver these grants to the local county school districts that don’t have the tax base as some of the city districts”.

Dr. Satchel said “On behalf of our kids we wants to thank Dr. Stutts for his support and recognition”. All three superintendents expressed their gratitude for the grant monies and told of the importance of using this money in areas of great need.

Cherokee High School Library will also receive a separate grant for $1,000. Shoals Scholar Dollars and Arch of the Shoals will also receive grants. Each school system was awarded according to their size and the percent of district representation. Colbert County Schools were awarded $38,600.
