On April 17, 2026, Dr. Sean Michael Rhuland finished the race, kept the faith, and entered eternity in the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Raised with humble beginnings, Sean’s life was marked early by grit, determination, and an unwavering work ethic. Those qualities earned him a full academic scholarship to Mississippi State University. During his summers, he worked in a sawmill and later in a nursing home, where he first discovered a deep calling to care for others. That calling would lead him to Emory University School of Medicine, where he pursued a life devoted to service and ultimately became a respected cardiologist.
Sean embodied a rare blend of strength and gentleness, brilliance and humility, determination and kindness. Medicine was never simply his profession—it was his ministry. He cared for his patients with extraordinary compassion, sacrifice, and personal devotion, treating each one not as a case, but as family.
Though deeply committed to his work, Sean found his greatest joy in the simple gifts of life and the people he loved most. He treasured hiking alongside his wife, playing golf with his son, snow skiing with his children, and spending long, peaceful days on the lake with his family. Whether smoking chicken on a slow afternoon, watching the sun dip below Wilson Lake, or gathering around the dinner table with his wife and children, these quiet moments became the memories he held closest.
Above all, Sean was a man of deep and abiding faith. His love for Jesus Christ shaped the way he lived, the way he loved, and the way he led his family. In all things, he sought to keep Christ at the center.
Sean is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Amy; his treasured children, Paige and Aidan; his father, Bill Rhuland, and wife Renee; his brother, Brett Rhuland, and wife Anna; his sister, Sara Anderson, and husband Troy; along with many extended family members, dear friends, colleagues, and grateful patients whose lives were forever touched by his care. He was preceded in death by his mother, Diane Rhuland.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Sean by embracing the moments he loved most: take a walk in the woods, play a round of golf, watch the sunset over the water, or sit around the table with those you love and truly savor the gift of being together. And as you do, think of Sean—surely now hiking Heaven’s most beautiful trails.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12, at Faith Church in Florence. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the remarkable life of a man who loved deeply, served faithfully, and finished well.
