Norbert Ignatius “Norb” Patla, age 87, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Sunday, June 28, 2026. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 14, 1938, Norb was the beloved son of Ignatius Edward and Eleanor Patla. He grew up alongside his brother, Melvyn “Mel” Patla.

Norb lived a life defined by extraordinary service, leadership, and devotion. He was a career officer and aviator in the United States Army, serving his country with profound courage and distinction. During his tours in Vietnam and throughout his aviation career, Norb was highly decorated for his valor and skill, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, five Bronze Stars, and eleven Air Medals. His leadership on active duty culminated in directing the largest Army aviation program of its time in 1986, a $4 billion endeavor.

After retiring from the Army at the rank of Colonel, Norb’s dedication to the armed forces did not end. He transitioned his expertise into military aviation flight simulation, where he poured his knowledge into training and preparing the next generation of Army aviators.

Beyond his distinguished military career, Norb was a man of deep faith and steadfast love. He was passionate about his involvement with his Church and treasured nothing more than spending time with his beloved wife, Judy, from which no stray animal was turned away…much to Norb’s “concern.” 😊

Norb was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Eleanor, and by his devoted wife, Judith Patla, who passed away on January 4, 2024.

His legacy of love and service lives on through his surviving family. He is survived by his brother, Mel Patla; his three children, Jonathan, Jennifer, and Jason Patla; and his four cherished grandchildren, Robbie, James, Ashlynn, and Kaili Patla, who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

A Memorial Mass honoring Norb’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at St. Williams Catholic Church, located at 929 Gunter Ave, Guntersville, AL 35976. All family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate his remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (https://t2t.org/) in Norb’s name, a cause that honors his lifelong commitment to the military and our first responders.
