Billy “Bill” Gene Slaten was born in Marshall County on May 28, 1934 and died July 1, 2026 at the age of 92, at the home of his son, Steven Gene Slaten (Bonnie), who cared for him in their home since April 2026, while under the care of Compassus Hospice in Birmingham and previously Shepherds Cove Hospice in Arab, AL.
Mr. Slaten is survived by his son, Steven Gene Slaten (Bonnie) of Pinson, AL; sister, Sue Smith Adams (Roy) of Arab, AL; five grandchildren, Daniel Staten (Ashley), Megan Wright, Jeff Grace (Anita), Tina Hoffman, Denny Largent; step-sons, Bart Miller, Michael Miller and Greg Miller, also of Arab, AL; great grandchildren, Natalie Wright, Kane Wright, Cooper Slaten, Reed Slaten; son-in-law, Dennis Largent; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Slaten was predeceased by his parents, Alvin Slaten and Era Slaten (who died saving Bill’s life when he was 2); stepmother, Leatha Slaten; his first wife, Dorothy Slaten (mother of Steve and Brenda), his second wife of over 20 years, Wilma Miller Slaten, his daughter, Brenda Largent; and two half-brothers, Ray Slaten and Melvin Slaten.
Mr. Slaten owned a masonry business for over 45 years, and enjoyed playing music, singing, having jam sessions with friends and family, and camping. The family would especially like to recognize the continuous care from Sue and Roy Adams for their selfless love and devotion to Bill for many years.
Family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30pm on Monday, July 6, 2026 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel in Arab, AL. A graveside service will follow at 2:00pm at Gilliam Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Arab, AL Pallbearers are Cooper Slaten, Dennis Largent, Roy Adams, Bart Miller, Casey Underwood and Tyler Grace.
