Nancy Helton, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 17th at the age of 88. Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Nancy’s life was a testament to her love for beauty, flowers, and her family.

Nancy graduated from Murphy High School in 1953 and Stephens Women’s College in 1955 with an associate degree in arts. She began her career at Mobile Gas Service Corp as a clerk typist and later graduated from Eastern Air Lines flight attendant training school, starting a brief career as an EAL stewardess. Following this, she worked as a clerk typist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Nancy’s passion for beautiful trinkets, art, and flowers brought joy to everyone who visited her home. She also had a talent for baking anything sweet, which made visiting her even more delightful.

In 1960, Nancy met and married the love of her life, Kendrel Helton, in Mobile, where they lived until relocating to Huntsville, Alabama, in 2006.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eleanore and Lord Edward Wheyland Sr.; her brother, Lord Edward “Bubba” Wheyland Jr.; and her beloved husband, Kendrel Martin Helton

Nancy is survived by two daughters, Lori Lewis (Dr. Frank Lewis) of Nashville and Elizabeth Nuwayhid (Dr. Ramsay Nuwayhid) of Huntsville; five grandchildren, Lauren Lewis Pelles (Andrew), Gregory Lewis (Vicky), Kathryn Damson (Brandon), Blake Nuwayhid, and Allyson Cooper (Chris); and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom were the light of her life.

Nancy was a devoted member of First Baptist Church Huntsville for many years.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who played a vital role in Nancy’s journey. Your compassion, dedication, and unwavering support provided comfort and dignity during her most vulnerable moments. We will be forever grateful to you all.
