Lauren H. Patterson Profile Photo  Lauren Hancock Patterson, 78, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Sanctuary Hospice House due to complications during her journey with dementia.

Lauren was born on December 15, 1947, to Elaine Graham Hancock and Lawrence Doyce Hancock in Tupelo, Mississippi. As a young girl, she participated in 4-H, where she showed and judged cattle. It was there, as a sixth grader, that she met the love of her life, Sam Garmon Patterson.

Lauren graduated from Tupelo High School in 1965. She attended Mississippi College for Women before transferring to Mississippi State University, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in education. She and Sam married in February 1969, some 10 years after they met in the cattle barn. Sam had enlisted in the United States Air Force and, after completing Officer Training School, the couple was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. There Lauren took her only job in education teaching fifth grade. Just six months into their marriage, Hurricane Camille struck the Gulf Coast. Sam was subsequently re-assigned to Topeka, Kansas, where he completed the remainder of his military service. When Lauren was unable to find employment in Topeka as an educator, her father offered her the opportunity to manage the Hancock Fabrics store opening in Topeka. It was a great learning experience and a successful one.

Following Sam’s discharge from the service, the couple returned to Tupelo in 1972. After the birth of their two children, Samantha and Hardin, Lauren purchased The Gizmo, a local gift shop, and returned to a flourishing career in retail. Her personality was ideally suited to interacting with the public through retail sales as her joy was found in helping people. After eight years, Lauren sold the Gizmo to devote more time to her family.

While her children were in high school Lauren was an eager chaperone for school trips to Washington, D.C, New York, the United Kingdom, and across Europe. She faithfully supported the THS football program, feeding the team before games each Friday, and serving as booster club treasurer, continuing even after her son’s graduation.

Lauren’s life of service was grounded in her steadfast faith in Jesus Christ. A lifelong member of Harrisburg Baptist Church, she served many roles, including more than 30 years as a children’s choir teacher. She and Sam eagerly opened their home for youth events and became favorite hosts for Disciple Now weekends.

Lauren served on the boards of many local charitable organizations, but since 2000 her time was wholly devoted to two: Global Outreach International and Sanctuary Hospice House, where she was a founding board member and past board chairman. She played a vital role in Celebration Village, serving as ticket sales coordinator from the inaugural year until 2024, when she passed the mantle to a well-trained team of volunteers. From boardroom to garden Lauren was deeply devoted to the excellence of Sanctuary. She felt a personal responsibility for the flowerbeds surrounding the grounds. Even on the hottest summer days she could be found there weeding, watering, and working the soil. The beauty Lauren helped create at Sanctuary extended beyond the gardens. Never one to sit idly, Lauren spent her evenings creating lovely cross-stitch artwork of poems, hymns, and scripture verses – pieces stitched in memory of family and friends – which now hang in every hallway at Sanctuary.

The other joys of Lauren’s life included her grandchildren and Mississippi State athletics. She was passionate about both and was doubly excited when she could experience them together.

Lauren was preceded in death by her parents, L.D. and Elaine Hancock; husband, Sam Patterson; brother, Larry Hancock; and grandson, Samuel Fikes.

She is survived by her sisters, Doyce Deas (Bill) and Janice Allen; daughter, Samantha Fikes (Craig); son, Hardin Patterson; grandchildren, Taylor Webb (Shannon) and Garmon Fikes; one great-granddaughter; and beloved extended family of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 12 p.m. until service time, Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Harrisburg Baptist Church in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Services honoring the life of Lauren will be 2 p.m., Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Harrisburg Baptist Church with Rev. David Langerfeld and Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, 5159 W Main St, Tupelo, MS 38801, or Global Outreach International, P.O. Box One Tupelo, MS 38802, two organizations that were especially meaningful to Lauren and reflect her lifelong dedication to faith, service, and caring for others.
