Mr. L. L. Whitten, 87, of Florence passed away on January 28, 2016 at his residence in Florence, Ala. He was born in Lauderdale County on April 4, 1928.
Our dad and granddaddy was a man full of vigor and life. Our dad loved Jesus and his family. He served his family, community and country. He was an avid sportsman, football player for Lauderdale County, UNA Hall of fame recipient, 10 seconds in the 100 yard dash, China Marine, Army Reserve office for 39 years, high school teacher and coach at Central High School.
He was also a successful businessman and owner of L.L. Whitten and Associates, police commissioner, and he served for many organizations in his community. He was a civitian and a member of the American Legion China Marine Association and a proud member of the American Legion of Florence.
Visitation for Mr. Whitten will be on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Greenview Funeral Home from 12 noon – 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Henry Melton officiating. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park. Military funeral honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 11 and the United States Marine Corp.
Mr. Whitten was preceded in death by his father, Luther Lawrence Whitten; mother, Beulah Mae Kimbrough; brothers, Bill Whitten and Wilburn Whitten; sisters, Lorene Dhority and Dorothy Cox.
He is survived by his wife, Bettye Dean Person Whitten of sixty-seven years; brother, Jack Kermit Whitten and his sister, Doris Smith. He also leaves behind his five children, William Michael “Mike” Whitten, Marsha Ann Whitten Russell, David L. Whitten, Steven L. Whitten and John Gregory “Greg” Whitten; grandchildren, Leslie, Michael and Sarah, John Baker, Scott, Ginna, Ashley and Kinsey, Brian, Mark, Matt, Josh, John and Caroline and twenty-five great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Whitten, Brian Whitten, Matt Whitten, John Baker Whitten, John Whitten, Mark Whitten and Josh Whitten.
His children and grandchildren thank him for being a strong disciplinarian and for teaching them how to hunt, fish, camp, shoot guns and to play golf. He also attended every ballgame, his children and grandchildren participated in.
Our dad and granddaddy inspired many with his “greatest-generation” ethics and principles. He will always be remembered, appreciated, loved and missed.
