Former Lauderdale County Superintendent of Education Holland Greer, age 88, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018 after an extended illness. He was a native of Center Star where he lived on the family farm. While farming, he developed a portion of the area into the lake community of Aqua Vista Shores. Following his expressed wishes, there will be no visitation and a graveside service will be Sunday, May 20th at the Center Star Cemetery with Reverend Bryan McIntyre officiating. Spry-Williams Funeral Home is directing.
Pallbearers are Jason Meadows, Greg Ezell, Carl Parker, Donald Parker, Wayne Parker, Jerry Hill, Tony Hendon and Kenny Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are James Spry, Bayless Thornton, Ronald Pettus and George Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allison Jones Greer and Virgie Williams Greer.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann Clendenin Greer; two daughters, Amy Greer Cruce (Bryan) and Melanie Greer; one son, John Greer (Jenny Ann); six grandchildren, Neeley Kelley, Jessica Miller (Jimmy), Pariss Brown (Terry), Sims Greer, Allie Craig Cruce and Anna Fountaine Greer; and two great-grandchildren, Avery Heupel and Will Miller.
Mr. Greer graduated from Lauderdale County High School, Florence State College (UNA) with a B.S.; Athens College with a Master’s degree; and the University of Alabama with an Ed.S. He taught at various Lauderdale County schools; within the Florence City System; and retired from Limestone County Schools. He served in the Air Force.
Mr. Greer was involved in politics, running for various offices and serving as Lauderdale County Superintendent of Education in the late Seventies. He later served on the county school board for 12 years. He was known for the newsletter he published after each Board meeting, believing the public should be informed. He also served his community as Past Commander of American Legion Post 11, was a past commander of Sons of Confederate Veterans, Tennessee Valley Camp, Florence, and was a charter member of the Center Star Ball Park, Neighborhood Watch and Fire Department.
