Helen Lyle Matthews – Obituary

helenHelen Lyle Matthews, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Huntsville Hospital after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

A native of Lawrence County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Willie C. and Bertha McClanahan Lyles. She was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church on Old Monrovia Rd. , Deputy Circuit Court Clerk of Lawrence County TN., American National Red Cross Chairman of Lakewood School Clinic, Salvation Army volunteer.

Mrs. Matthews was also Den Mother and Scout Leader, President of The Huntsville Women’s Bowling Association 19 years, served on the Huntsville Women’s Bowling Association Board for 36 years, and member of the Hall of Fame Huntsville Women’s Bowling and Member Emerita of the Huntsville WBA for Outstanding Service. In addition, Mrs. Matthews was a member of Alabama Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame and she received the Amanda Jensen Award for Outstanding Service to the Huntsville Women Bowlers, Alabama Women’s Bowling Association Feature Writer of The Year 1998 and served as Director of the Alabama Women’s Bowling Association for six years.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Eugene Francis Matthews of Huntsville; son, Mark Eugene Matthews (Regina) of Madison; daughter, Terrie Matthews Riggs (David) of Decatur; and four grandchildren: Joshua Mark Matthews, Holly Matthews Mudd, Benjamin David Riggs, and Anna Kathleen Riggs.

Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Berryhill Funeral Home. Service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Huntsville Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lilies of the Valley or Grace United Methodist Church.
