Grant awarded to extend trail in Sheffield

WHPARKSHEFFIELD – Governor  Robert Bentley has awarded $100,000 for the second phase of a recreational trail project in Sheffield.

The grant will enable the city to extend the River Heritage Trail from the eastern edge of Whippoorwill Park to an existing stone bridge that was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

“The River Heritage Trail and other trails provide opportunities for Alabamians to experience and

enjoy the natual beauty of our state,” said Bentley. “I am pleased to help Sheffield officials complete

this trail extension.”

The concrete bike and pedestrian trail will be extended approximately 1,250 feet. It will include eight light poles and two benches and will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the Recreational Trails Program of the Federal Highway Administration. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, workforce development, energy conservation, economic development, water resource management and recreation.

Bentley notified Mayor Ian Sanford that the grant had been awarded. Matching funds of $25,350 will supplement the award.
