George H. Carter, Jr., died at home, Wednesday, December 18, 2013. He was born in Tuscumbia, AL, on March 12, 1921, to Gladys and George H. Carter. He was married to Margaret Landis Carter for fifty seven years, and his brother was Sam T. Carter, who both preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, William (Billy) Carter, daughter, Peggy Carter Thompson (Dan); grandchildren, Allison Thompson Bradford (Zach), Reece Thompson, Tanya Sockwell and Mason Carter; great grandson, Tate Sockwell; sister-in-law, Mary Louise Carter; brother-in-law, Robert C. Landis, three nieces, and four nephews.
Mr. Carter was a member of Sheffield United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of trustees and Board of Stewarts. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Mental Health Board and served twenty eight years on the Sheffield Park and Recreation board. He was honored to have George Carter Park West named for him and was one of the twenty organizers of the Tri Cities Quarterback Club. He was past president of the Tennessee Valley Country Club and past Vice President of Turtle Point Yacht and County Club.
He was a graduate of Sheffield High School, where he was captain of both the football and baseball teams. He attended Auburn University before World War II and served in the 1st Calvary division during both World War II and Korea. In 1956 he and E. S. Robbins Sr. started National Floor Products, Inc., where he served as Vice President until retirement.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 21, 2013, 9-11 a.m. at Sheffield First United Methodist Church. His funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary with burial in in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.
Pallbearers will be Jack Turner, John Carter, Sam Turner, Gene Saywell, Rusty Turner and Sam T. Carter, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers are James Caden, Jr., Edsel Holden, Tommy Brocato, Dr. Winston Williams, Rubin Watkins, Dr. Wyatt Blake, Dr. Terry Graves, Dr. Loren McCoy and Dr. John Young.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Loren McCoy and a very special thanks to Jessica Benson and Fran Williams with Hospice of the Shoals for taking such good care of him.
In lieu of flowers we ask that memorials be made to St. Jude or Sheffield High School Athletic Dept.
