Dr. Fred F. Guthrie, Jr., 92, of Fort Payne, passed away on May 2nd, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and steadfast love.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on December 27th, 1933, Dr. Guthrie was raised with values that would shape the course of his life—devotion to God, commitment to family, and a calling to serve others. Those who knew him remember a man of sharp mind, tireless energy, a great sense of humor, and deep generosity.
Dr. Guthrie faithfully served as a Presbyterian pastor and church planter for many years, dedicating his life to shepherding congregations and helping build communities rooted in Christ. His ministry extended far beyond the pulpit; he was a mentor, counselor, and friend to many, always ready with wisdom drawn from a lifetime of studying Scripture.
A man of deep and abiding faith, he found great joy in leading Bible studies, encouraging others in their walk, and quietly living out the truths he taught. Whether in the company of many or in one-on-one conversation, his love for the Lord was evident and contagious.
At home, he was a devoted husband, having shared 67 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Shirley. Together, they built a life centered on faith and family. He was a loving father to three children, Ruth, Anne, and Fred, and a steady, faithful presence whose influence will carry on for generations.
In quieter moments, Dr. Guthrie enjoyed reading, reflecting, and—earlier in life—spending time on the golf course. Yet even in leisure, his heart remained oriented toward serving others and investing in what mattered most.
He is survived by his wife, three children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church in the near future. Date and time to announced.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Geneva Benefits (the agency of the Presbyterian Church in America responsible for providing retirement, insurance, and wellbeing benefits to its ministry staff – https://genevabenefits.org/), continuing the work he so faithfully carried out.
Dr. Guthrie’s life was a testament to enduring faith, quiet strength, and unwavering love. He will be deeply missed, yet his legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the truth he faithfully proclaimed.
