Elva Lena Cody McBee, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of October 20, 2022 with family by her side. Born and raised in Harlan, KY to the late George and Abigail Owens Cody, she was a true coal miner’s daughter.
Elva married Charles Kenneth McBee (deceased), of Harlan in 1954, shared 59 years together and three children, Desiree, Valerie, and Craig. The family moved from Harlan to Detroit, Michigan and later to Decatur, Alabama escaping the cold winters to raise their family Southern style. Elva was a stay-at-home mom until her children were school age at which time she joined the work force in the Decatur City School system to keep the same schedule as her children. Later she worked with the Commissioner of License Office at the Morgan County Court House. The family moved further south to Bay Minette residing there for several years where she again worked in the Probate Judges office in Baldwin County until her retirement. Elva split her retirement years with her children between Decatur, Gulf Shores and Fairhope.
Elva Lena’s biggest enjoyment was spending time with family. Her passion was cooking family recipes and keeping the secret ingredient a secret. She was also an avid reader, enjoyed watching tennis and playing card games. Proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, she filled her dresser with pictures keeping them close to her heart.
Elva is survived by her three children, Desiree Scott (Rand), Valerie McBee, Craig McBee (Kim), three grandchildren Tyler Scott (Julie), Anna McBee (Mickey), McKenna McBee, and four great grandchildren, Cliff and Finley Vaughan, Charlotte and Jack Scott. She is also survived by her sisters Vickie, Diana, brothers John and Don.
