Durward Alston (D.A.) Moore, Jr. born in Valley Head, Alabama, on September 8, 1926, the eldest child of Durward Alston Moore, Sr. and Jessie Hall Moore, died July 28, 2013 at the age of 86 after a brief illness. His parents preceded him in death, as well as his sister, Katherine Moore Wiggins. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hettie Nadine Moore, his sister, Sarah Moore Jackson, his children, Michael Moore (Stephanie), Anne Smith (Wade), and Karen West (Doug), grandchildren, Abigail Moore and Michael Patrick Moore, Nathaniel Collum and Elizabeth Smith, and Lara Ambrose and Emily West, and step-grandchildren Drew and Cameron Smith, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
D.A was a graduate of Coffee High School in Florence. He served with the US Marine Corps on Guam and Okinawa during World War II, and was a Marine radio operator stationed on mainland China after the war ended. After returning stateside, he continued to serve his country as a member of the Alabama National Guard for a number of years.
After working for years as a cabinet maker and carpenter, Mr. Moore was employed at Reynolds Metals Company for a period before taking a job with the US Postal Service, retiring from that position in 1987. Following his retirement, he spent much of his time as a “gentleman farmer” and in various carpentry projects for his children and grandchildren. D.A. was a member of Underwood Baptist Church in Florence, Alabama for more than 50 years. He had a great passion for the printed word and was an avid and voracious reader.
Funeral services are to be held at Greenview Memorial Chapel on Friday, August 2. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Alabama Boys/Girls Ranch, the American Red Cross, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
The family would like to recognize and express its gratitude for the tender and particular care provided by numerous caregivers, with hospice care provided by Amedisys, during the final weeks of D.A.’s life. This care enabled him to spend his last days in the home that he loved. The family would like to extend special thanks and gratitude to Mrs. Janet Ezekiel for her untiring care and devotion to Mr. Moore in his last days.
