SHEFFIELD – Colbert County Historical Landmarks Foundation (CCHLF) will host an unveiling ceremony for the historic marker recently installed near the Standpipe in Sheffield. It stands beside the historic Andrew Jackson black walnut tree on Gordon Drive near 14th Street.

The marker depicts the Jackson Ferry location as viewed from the top of the bluff looking up river and down Jackson Hollow to the original crossing, said Joel Mize, who spearheaded the project.

The marker installation ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, November 16, at 3:15 pm.

“This was the area’s first ferry downstream of Campbell’s Bainbridge Ferry,” Mize said. “The ferry is estimated to have been operational by 1818 and was integral to the full military road constructed between 1816 and 1820. After a few years, the ferry crossing was relocated upstream to the present Jackson Highway O’Neal Bridge crossing to be more convenient to Court Street in Florence.”
