Carrie Mae Fulkerson, 93 years old, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away January 1, 2021. She was in good health and had an excellent memory for someone of her years until she contracted COVID-19 two weeks before her death.
She was born in Sonora, Kentucky on August 26, 1927. She was a children’s Sunday School teacher, church clerk, and a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Sonora. She loved her church very much.
She was a graduate of Sonora High School and went on to teach 3rd grade for a year. Following that she was secretary of the Sonora School for 50 years. She never learned to drive, and as a result, she walked to church, to work, and anywhere else she needed to go in Sonora. She could be seen walking down the railroad tracks going to and from the drugstore, grocery, and post office. In 2010, she moved with her sister to Huntsville to be closer to their niece, Carol Ann. While living in Huntsville, Carrie attended Morningside Baptist Church. She loved her Sonora friends and never forgot them and was always interested in how they were doing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Mae Fulkerson; sister, Annie Marie Fulkerson Cubine; infant sister, Ella Francis Fulkerson; brothers, Mitchell, and Earnest Lee; and an infant brother, Estell Fulkerson.
She is survived by her niece, Carol Ann Fulkerson Key (Charlie) of Huntsville, Alabama; two great- nieces, Laura Debiasi (Marcus), Megan Mills (Charles); and 6 great-great nieces and nephews, Jessie, Benjamin, Charlie, Levi, Rebecca, and Gabriel, all of Birmingham, Alabama.
Due to COVID 19, there will be a graveside service at Sonora Cemetery on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 11 a.m. The family requests that you wear a face covering and practice social distancing.
